Introducing Capital J: A New Program from the EDCJCC

By Edlavitch DCJCC August 21, 2025

It’s not easy being Jewish in America right now, in this tumultuous moment in our nation’s history. We need meaningful opportunities to be in community and engaged in thoughtful conversation. That is why I couldn’t be more excited to launch Capital J at the Edlavitch DCJCC.

Capital J will host prominent Jewish voices from politics, culture, business, and the arts to help us explore what it means to be a Jew in America in our present moment.

Capital J is a forum for Jews across the DMV to wrestle with the issues of the day, the roles we play in shaping the national conversation, and in turn, how those conversations shape us. Featuring high-profile speakers at mainstage events in the EDCJCC’s Aaron & Cecile Goldman Theater and small-group discussions in intimate living room gatherings across DC, Capital J is driven by bold conversations. I hope you’ll join me in being a part of these conversations.

Our inaugural season, Capital J: Uneasy, will explore how Jewish artists, intellectuals, and journalists are navigating the current moment through their respective lenses. In this time of unease and tension, this season will grapple with such questions as: What is the role of humor in a moment of adversity? How do we balance loss and joy? How do Jews navigate political identity when it’s so contested? And how do we talk about all of these things when open discussion feels most difficult?

This fall’s lineup features:
🎭 Richard Kind on Sunday, October 19 at 3:30 PM: Beloved actor and comic voice of unease about storytelling, humor, and the enduring power of Jewish wit.

🖋️ Kathryn Schulz on Wednesday, November 19 at 7:00 PM: Pulitzer Prize–winning writer on love, grief, and the stories we tell about where we come from.

🗣️ David Frum and Hanna Rosin on Tuesday, December 9 at 7:00 PM: Two sharp political thinkers asking what it means to navigate politics as and for Jews during this turbulent time.

In addition, Capital J will host offstage salons, pop-up dialogues, and one-of-a-kind gatherings designed to stretch the conversation beyond the spotlight.

Please feel free to reach out to our program director Adam Cooper with any questions.

I can’t wait to see you this fall!

Warmly,
Jesse Bordwin, EDCJCC Chief Experience Officer
