Polypharmacy: The Hidden Dangers for our Older Adult Population

Older Adults (65+)

Date : Thursday, Apr 04

Time : 10:15 am - 12:00 pm
Location : Edlavitch DCJCC
1529 Sixteenth Street, NW, Washington, DC

This workshop addresses the “normalization” of overtreatment and the hidden dangers polypharmacy can cause in our older adult population. Open to individual patients and those who care for older adults.

How many medications is too many medications? As we age, we see more chronic conditions and more medications. Are they all necessary? Prescriptions, over the counter, vitamins and supplements, and herbals can all add up to a hefty pill burden. Is such a burden safe? This workshop addresses the “normalization” of overtreatment and the hidden dangers polypharmacy can cause in our older adult population.

By the end of the presentation, you will be able to recognize that potential dangers increase as the number of medications increase and understand why the opportunity for medication errors increases as the medical team does. After learning your role comes with power and responsibility, you feel empowered to self-advocate with your healthcare team to obtain the best possible outcomes for a healthy and active life.

We welcome individual patients and those who care for older adults. This session begins with a meet and greet followed by a formal presentation at 10:30 AM and ending with a Q&A.

Free to attend, but advance registration is required. Please reach out to Tena Howell at thowell@edcjcc.org with any questions.
