Join acclaimed author and historian Ian Buruma in conversation with podcast host and former federal prosecutor Michael Zeldin for a candid conversation about history, politics, and the ideas, events, and people that continue to shape our world. As part of their wide-ranging discussion, our speakers will focus on Buruma’s most recent book, Stay Alive: Berlin 1939-1945, a stunning exploration of daily life, moral compromise, and survival in the German capital under the Nazi regime.
This event will be held a private home in Washington, DC. Space is limited and advance registration is required. Registration will close on Wednesday, November 4, at 12:00 PM.

Ian Buruma is the Paul W. Williams Professor of Human Rights and Journalism at Bard College and former editor of the New York Review of Books. His work largely focuses on the culture of Japan and China, but he has written extensively on European affairs, film, and many other subjects. He is a member of The American Academy of Arts and Letters. Buruma has a regular podcast with Chang Che about East Asian topics called Into Asia. Ian Buruma’s new book, Stay Alive: Berlin 1939-1945, was published in March 2026 by Penguin-Random House in the US and Atlantic Books in the UK.
Michael Zeldin is a widely respected television and radio legal analyst and the host of the podcast That Said with Michael Zeldin. Over the course of his career, he has served as a federal prosecutor, private-sector lawyer, law professor, and Principal at a Big Four consulting firm. A prolific writer and commentator, Michael has published op-eds in CNN.com, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Hill, and The Washington Times. His work reflects a deep commitment to legal rigor, historical context, and making complex legal and political issues accessible to the public.
