Book Brunch: Hyphen: Jewish Stories in Our Own Words

All Ages

Date : Sunday, Feb 01

Time : 11:00 am - 12:30 pm
Location : Edlavitch DCJCC
1529 Sixteenth Street, NW, Washington, DC

The new graphic novel anthology Hyphen celebrates what it means to be Jewish today and amplifies voices that have too often been overlooked. Join us to explore some of these stories with the book’s creators and featured storytellers.

What do a Laotian born refugee, an Indian culinary creator, a trans improv artist, a Jewpanese podcaster, and a Latinx storyteller have in common? They are all Jewish, and their unique journeys are part of Hyphen, a gorgeous comics anthology showcasing extraordinary stories of everyday people. Each story is told in the contributor’s own words and brought to life by international artists, weaving together ancient traditions, modern journeys, and deeply personal experiences.

The Jewish people in 2025 are more diverse than ever in our history. At the heart of Hyphen is the belief that Jewish identity is not one-size-fits-all. By empowering contributors to tell their own stories, Hyphen is a powerful celebration of what it means to be Jewish today —amplifying voices that have too often been overlooked.

Join us for mimosas, bagels, and rich conversation with the book's creators and two featured storytellers. We're thrilled to welcome Dubbs Weinblatt, Eddna Samuel, Fabrice Sapolsky and Julian Voloj, who together cover trans, Indian, Algerian, and Colombian Jewish stories.

This program is brought to you by the Edlavitch DCJCC’s Capital J and GLOE program in partnership with Be’chol Lashon and Ammud: The Jews of Color Torah Academy. This event was made possible by the generosity of Felix Lloyd and Jordan Lloyd Bookey, Linda Adams, Joshua Maxey, and Heather Bramble, with thanks to our promotional partners, the Lillian and Albert Small Capital Jewish Museum and Sixth & I.
