Summer Musical Theater Camp FAQ’s

Does my child need to have experience in theater?
No experience needed – just a love for singing and dancing!

What’s a typical day at musical theater camp?
We start with a “check-in” icebreaker, followed by movement and voice warm-ups that teach skills that students will use in their performances. After that, we jump into rehearsal for songs, dances, and scenes. We sometimes work in a big group and sometimes break into several smaller groups. The day ends with a “check-out.”

Do you have auditions?
We have informal placement auditions on the first afternoon of each program. If a student wants to sing alone in a show or recital (not every student does), we ask them to sing a song of their choice. They can bring in sheet music, use playback, or sing unaccompanied.

How “produced” are the shows?
Disney’s Frozen Jr. will be fully produced with costumes, lights, etc. The one-week programs will have lights and sound, but we’ll ask students to wear clothes they already own that go with that week’s theme.

What’s the focus of the programs? What can we expect?
The programs involve the students being in motion most of the day, and they have to be highly focused as they learn music, dances, and acting scenes. We often need to ask parents to send extra snacks, because the level of activity creates hungry kids! 🙂 However, what’s most important to us is to create an environment that’s artistically challenging but interpersonally non-competitive. We assign roles in such a way that each student has a lot of stage time, and we focus on ensemble-building activities. Theater is a team sport, and we hope that the students will make lifelong friends at Theater J.
