Oliver Butler

Theater J is pleased to present award-winning artist Oliver Butler (director of Hester Street) for a one-night-only event about how new work is created, how creative practice is established, and how artistic decisions are made. The director of Broadway sensation What the Constitution Means to Me and the Co-Artistic Director of The Debate Society, Oliver grew up in the wings of Broadway: he is the son of famed stage and screen star Pamela Payton-Wright, whose credits include Ironweed and The Freshman on film; The Crucible, A Streetcar Named Desire, and Night of the Iguana on Broadway; and the beloved role of Addie Cramer on One Life to Live.

Join us for a special evening in which Oliver takes us behind the scenes of the theatrical process using excerpts from Paul Zindel’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds, in which Oliver’s mother originated the starring role of Tillie. Be ready for a lively discussion – and perhaps to play a role!
