Howard Shalwitz will share surprising connections between his long tenure as Artistic Director of Woolly Mammoth and his more recent experiences seeing theatre in Eastern and Central Europe.  His talk will describe examples of unexpected play-making strategies being used by theatre artists in other countries, along with ideas for how they might help us invigorate American theatre in these challenging times.

Howard Shalwitz co-founded Woolly Mammoth in 1980, and over 38 seasons built it into one of the nation’s most influential producers of provocative new plays. He has directed and performed at Woolly, in New York and across the country, receiving multiple Helen Hayes nominations and awards as both an actor and director.  In 2014 he won the prestigious Margo Jones Award for his lifetime commitment to new American plays.  Since 2018, Howard has served as Associate Director of the Center for International Theatre Development (CITD) where he leads a multi-year project to connect theatre leaders in the US and Poland.  For Theater J, he teaches about international theater; and opening February 2026, he will direct the premiere of Ali Veterbi’s THE WORLD TO COME in a co-pro between Theater J and Woolly.
