This charming and inspiring documentary about the beloved American ventriloquist Shari Lewis and her popular sock puppet Lamb Chop is directed by Emmy-nominated Lisa D’Apolito.

As a young female ventriloquist with big aspirations, Shari Lewis was searching for a voice who could say things that a young woman in the 1950s could not and found it in a sock puppet named Lamb Chop. The duo debuted on CBS children’s television series “Captain Kangaroo” in 1956 and went on to attain cultural icon status in the U.S. by the end of the 20th century.

The screening will be followed by a conversation with film director Lisa D’Apolito.

About the Panelists

Lisa D’Apolito is the director of Shari and Lamb Chop. She is an Emmy nominated producer, director and archivist. Lisa’s film documentary, Love, Gilda was selected as the opening night film of the Tribeca Film Festival, was distributed theatrically through Magnolia Pictures, had a broadcast premiere on CNN and was nominated for 2 creative Emmy’s.

Ryan Lintelman is entertainment curator in the Division of Culture & the Arts at the National Museum of American History. His research interests include American film and television history, comedy, and the history of collecting entertainment memorabilia. Ryan has curated exhibitions on children’s television, Jim Henson and the Muppets, and The Wizard of Oz, and he is one of the curators of the landmark exhibition Entertainment Nation, exploring music, sports, television, theater and film in American history. He is currently writing a book exploring how comedy has shaped the nation’s history.
