Behrend Builders

Behrend Builders

Our award-winning volunteer program was established to meet the critical needs of Washington’s low-income housing community and to supplement DC’s over-extended social service agencies. Behrend Builders engages volunteers in repairing, rebuilding, and renovating low-income homes, shelters, schools, and community centers.

Training is provided on-site and experienced Program Managers supervise all projects. No skills or previous renovation experience is necessary.

Volunteering with Behrend Builders is an amazing learning experience. Behrend volunteers learn valuable construction skills and have the opportunity to explore and engage with social justice issues.

Behrend Builders operates throughout the year providing one-day or longer-term projects for groups of volunteers. Behrend Builders has established close relationships with non-profit social service agencies throughout the city that rely on Behrend Builders to provide necessary renovation and repair services.

Upcoming Behrend Builders Events

December 25th Day of Service
Dec 25 @ 6:00 am – 6:00 pm

December 25th Day of Service (D25) is the Edlavitch DCJCC’s largest volunteer event of the year. Join over 1,000 volunteers at a social service agency in the metro-DC area to prepare and serve meals, sing carols, visit home-bound seniors, throw holiday parties, play bingo, and deliver holiday cheer to those in need.

This year, while the EDCJCC building is undergoing renovation, the Hyatt Regency will be D25’s home base. Several ways to give back will be available on-site at the Hyatt Regency, including our Winter Blood Drive, making instant meal kits, creating cards for emergency personnel working on Christmas Day, and many others. Registration and check-in will also take place at the Hyatt Regency this year.

Many of the projects are family-friendly – please read individual project descriptions carefully for the minimum age to volunteer at each site.

"This is a personal thank you [to Maggio Roofing] from deep down in our hearts for ‘a roof for mom’. This is truly a blessing. God heard our cries for help! We are so happy. My elderly, handicap mom even looks better and resting much better without hearing the sounds of rain water pouring in the many buckets and pots throughout the bedrooms. We owe our hearts and soul to you as the donors and the many volunteers who made all of this possible through the Behrend Builders."

“I want to take a moment to thank You and Behrend Builders for your continued support and for bringing GLOE to enhance the work of Casa Ruby for the past few years. Casa Ruby is a much better place because of the support of all of you who now have become part of our family. D25 was a wonderful experience with GLOE volunteers. Not only did they bring gifts but they shared their time and warmth. They became a big part of our homeless youth life for an evening. They felt the love. One of the volunteers even played music for them. It was amazing. I also want to express my personal gratitude. As my life has been uplifted by the support given, I find myself feeling stronger in everything that I do because I do not feel alone. I have the Jewish community behind me at Casa Ruby. Last year I gave a talk at the Holocaust Museum and for the first time I felt that there was a community that cared about the injustices of the communities that I represent. “

"I wanted to take a moment to let you know how much the Polinger Team enjoyed working with you and Margo yesterday at the Raymond Educational Campus. I have received great feedback from everyone involved and wanted to thank you on behalf of us all for making the experience both fun and rewarding. We will certainly be keeping Behrend Builders in mind for future community outreach projects!"
