SUMMARY:Hands on Hearts CPR and AED Training
DESCRIPTION:The Hands on Hearts training is a community-centered\, life-saving education program designed to empower everyday individuals to act quickly and confidently in medical emergencies. Developed by the DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department\, the program focuses on strengthening the critical link between the onset of an emergency and the arrival of professional responders. At its core\, the training emphasizes that immediate bystander action can dramatically increase survival rates\, especially in cases of cardiac arrest and opioid overdose. \n\n\n\nOverall\, the training is designed to be accessible\, practical\, and immediately applicable. Participants leave with a clear understanding of how to recognize emergencies\, take decisive action\, and potentially save lives in their homes\, workplaces\, and communities. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis program is open to adults and teenagers over the age of 16. Space is limited and advance registration is required. \n\n\n\nIf you have any questions\, please reach out to info@edcjcc.org. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Training:Participants in the training can expect to gain practical\, hands-on knowledge across four key areas. First\, they will learn Hands-Only CPR\, including how to assess a situation\, position their hands correctly\, and deliver chest compressions at the appropriate depth and rhythm. This simplified CPR approach removes barriers to action and equips participants with the confidence to step in during a critical moment. \n\n\n\nThe training also covers the use of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs)\, teaching participants how to locate\, operate\, and follow the device’s prompts to deliver a potentially life-saving shock. In addition\, participants are introduced to the PulsePoint app\, which connects trained community members to nearby cardiac emergencies and maps registered AED locations\, enabling faster response before EMS arrives. \n\n\n\nFinally\, participants receive instruction in administering naloxone (Narcan)\, a medication that can reverse opioid overdoses. This portion of the training helps individuals recognize the signs of an overdose and respond quickly and effectively\, with many participants receiving a take-home dose.

SUMMARY:Day at the J: The Women Who Made Us
DESCRIPTION:Behind every one of us is a woman who showed up\, spoke up\, and refused to let us forget where we came from. This Day at the J celebrates the women who shaped us and invites us to explore what we’ve carried forward. While kids ages 7 and under enjoy an afternoon of engaging activities\, parents can choose how they want to spend their time. \n\n\n\nIf you’ve read Nobody Will Tell You This But Me by Bess Kalb — a funny\, moving\, and deeply Jewish portrait of four generations of women told through the voice of a grandmother who simply refuses to be forgotten — join us for a rich group discussion about memory\, love\, loss\, and what it means to be the person someone believed in completely. The book will be provided ahead of time in your choice of paperback\, digital\, or audiobook format so you have everything you need to dive in. \n\n\n\nDidn’t get to the book? No problem! Spend the afternoon exploring your own family story through guided genealogy activities and family tree building. You may be surprised what you uncover — and what’s been waiting to be passed down. \n\n\n\nThe afternoon wraps with the whole family back together for pizza and Havdalah\, ending the week the way it should: around the table and with the people who matter. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease note that space is limited and advance registration is required. We are not able to accommodate walk-ins for this event. Registration closes Friday\, April 24\, at 5:00 PM. \n\n\n\n\nClick here to register\n\n\n\n\nDay at the J is a new program that brings together families with children ages 7 and under at the EDCJCC. If you have any questions or if the price of this program poses a barrier\, please reach out to Lauren at leskovitz@edcjcc.org.

SUMMARY:The Extraordinary Jewish Legacy and Experience in Shanghai: An Evening With Dvir Bar Gal
DESCRIPTION:The Defiant Requiem Foundation and the Edlavitch DCJCC are pleased to invite you to a special evening featuring Dvir Bar Gal\, renowned expert on the remarkable story of Jewish Shanghai. \n\n\n\nFor 100 years\, while Shanghai was being transformed from a modest port town into one of the world’s great cosmopolitan capitals\, a little-known and extraordinary chapter of Jewish life was unfolding. Three distinct waves of Jewish immigration\, from Iraq\, Russia\, and central Europe shaped the city’s culture and heritage. Baghdadi Jewish families became influential leaders in Shanghai’s commercial and civic life during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Russian immigrants left a long-lasting western culture in Shanghai’s classic-music\, theater and western medicine. And during World War II\, thousands of Jewish refugees found safe haven in Shanghai\, one of the only places in the world that offered refuge without visas. \n\n\n\nAt its height\, Shanghai’s Jewish population reached nearly 30\,000. But under the rise of communism\, the entire Jewish community of Shanghai vanished. What brought them to the “pearl of the orient?”  Why did they all leave? And what remains today? \n\n\n\nJoin Dvir Bar-Gal for a compelling presentation as he uncovers the dramatic\, inspiring\, and eye-opening story of Jewish Shanghai – a story of refuge\, resilience\, and a remarkable legacy. \n\n\n\nAttendance is free\, but space is limited and registration is required. Please note that this event is being held IN PERSON and it will not be livestreamed or recorded. If you have any questions\, please contact Alexandra Zapruder at azapruder@defiantrequiem.org. \n\n\n\nThis program is a partnership of The Defiant Requiem Foundation and the Edlavitch DCJCC\, and it is supported by generous donations from Tina and Albert Small Jr.\, Debbie Ratner-Salzberg and Michael Salzberg\, and The Marta and Frank Jager Family Foundation.

SUMMARY:Giving Back Circle
DESCRIPTION:Join the EDCJCC’s inaugural Giving Back Circle—a giving circle with a twist! Instead of focusing on financial contributions\, this program centers on giving your time through volunteer work and community building. \n\n\n\nLed by volunteer leaders\, the group will select projects that align with the issues they care about most\, creating a meaningful way to give back to the DC community. This program is ideal for people who are excited to help design and shape their own volunteer projects\, and less suited for those who prefer drop-in or pre-arranged opportunities. \n\n\n\nThe first session will be held in the evening on Monday\, April 20 and will include learning\, discussion\, and collaborative planning for the next six months. Together\, the group will choose projects and set a schedule\, with activities taking place on weeknights or weekends. The cohort will meet once a month for six months\, and participants are asked to attend at least 4 of the 6 sessions. \n\n\n\nThis program is open to adults ages 25–40 from any Jewish background. Registration is $25 per person; if cost is a barrier or if you have any additional questions\, please email Mira at msmith@edcjcc.org. During the program\, participants will also have opportunities to donate items or funds to specific projects.

This group will meet weekly in person at the EDCJCC (at 16th and Q) for four weeks to provide a safe space for parents-to-be to discuss their experiences and learn from one another. Of course\, we will leave plenty of time for Q&A\, discussion\, and schmoozing. \n\n\n\nThis session will be held on Wednesday evenings\, April 15-May 6\, 2026. The first and fourth weeks are intended for expecting moms only. Dads and non-birthing parents are warmly welcomed to join us for Weeks 2 and 3\, and they will have the option to have their own separate session on Week 4 if desired. The group will be kept small so that connections can be fostered easily. \n\n\n\nAdvance registration is required. If you have any questions or if the cost of this program poses a barrier in any way\, please reach out to Miriam at mszubin@edcjcc.org.
