SUMMARY:Chemo Care Kits for GW Hospital
DESCRIPTION:Spend your evening supporting patients undergoing chemotherapy at GW Hospital Center. The program will begin with a presentation from a clinical social worker at the GW Cancer Center and a vegetarian pizza dinner. Volunteers will then assemble care kits for patients currently undergoing cancer treatment at the GW Cancer Research Center. These kits are designed to brighten patients’ days while providing items that can help make the chemotherapy process a little more comfortable. \n \nThe cost of this program is $10 to help cover the cost of supplies. Please reach out to Lyssa at ajellenik@edcjcc.org with any questions or if cost is a barrier to participation.

SUMMARY:Hands on Hearts CPR and AED Training
DESCRIPTION:The Hands on Hearts training is a community-centered\, life-saving education program designed to empower everyday individuals to act quickly and confidently in medical emergencies. Developed by the DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department\, the program focuses on strengthening the critical link between the onset of an emergency and the arrival of professional responders. At its core\, the training emphasizes that immediate bystander action can dramatically increase survival rates\, especially in cases of cardiac arrest and opioid overdose. \n\n\n\nOverall\, the training is designed to be accessible\, practical\, and immediately applicable. Participants leave with a clear understanding of how to recognize emergencies\, take decisive action\, and potentially save lives in their homes\, workplaces\, and communities. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis program is open to adults and teenagers over the age of 16. Space is limited and advance registration is required. \n\n\n\nIf you have any questions\, please reach out to info@edcjcc.org. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Training:Participants in the training can expect to gain practical\, hands-on knowledge across four key areas. First\, they will learn Hands-Only CPR\, including how to assess a situation\, position their hands correctly\, and deliver chest compressions at the appropriate depth and rhythm. This simplified CPR approach removes barriers to action and equips participants with the confidence to step in during a critical moment. \n\n\n\nThe training also covers the use of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs)\, teaching participants how to locate\, operate\, and follow the device’s prompts to deliver a potentially life-saving shock. In addition\, participants are introduced to the PulsePoint app\, which connects trained community members to nearby cardiac emergencies and maps registered AED locations\, enabling faster response before EMS arrives. \n\n\n\nFinally\, participants receive instruction in administering naloxone (Narcan)\, a medication that can reverse opioid overdoses. This portion of the training helps individuals recognize the signs of an overdose and respond quickly and effectively\, with many participants receiving a take-home dose.

SUMMARY:Teen Volunteer Project: Sandwich Making for Martha's Table
DESCRIPTION:Join the Youth Action Institute in a new service project supporting Martha’s Table. Teens will help make sunbutter sandwiches to be distributed through McKenna’s Wagon\, Martha’s Table’s nightly meal distribution program. McKenna’s Wagon delivers fresh meals every day of the year to neighbors navigating food or housing challenges. This important work depends on the dedication of volunteers who help prepare and package food for distribution. By making sandwiches together\, we will help ensure community members visiting McKenna’s Wagon receive a reliable and nourishing meal. \n\n\n\nThis project is open to teens ages 11–18 and is eligible for 1.5 SSL hours. \n\n\n\nFree to attend\, but space is limited and advance RSVP is required. \n\n\n\nIf you have any questions\, please contact Lyssa at ajellenik@edcjcc.org.

SUMMARY:The Wexler Lecture on Jewish History: Forbidden: A 3\,000-Year History of Jews and the Pig
DESCRIPTION:Jews do not eat pig. This (not always true) observation has been made by both Jews and non-Jews for three thousand years. Over time\, the pig becomes a popular metaphor for Jewish/non-Jewish identity. This talk explores this historical development. Starting in the Hebrew Bible\, where the pig is tabooed but not necessarily singled out more than other food prohibitions\, we see the emergence of the pig as a symbol of Jewish identity in the Second Temple period and beyond. \n\n\n\nFrom the pages of the Talmud to the pages of The Forward\, we follow the pig as it forages through Jewish history. Following the lecture\, there will be a Q&A session and a thematic (and kosher-certified!) reception. \n\n\n\nThis program is free to attend in person or virtually\, but advance RSVP is required. If you have any questions\, please contact Helene Ziesing at hziesing@edcjcc.org. \n\n\n\nThis program is a part of the annual Wexler Lecture series made possible by the Edlavitch DCJCC’s Bernard Wexler Fund for Jewish History. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Speaker: Jordan D. Rosenblum is the Belzer Professor of Classical Judaism and Director of Religious Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His most recent book\, Forbidden: A 3\,000-Year History of Jews and the Pig (New York University Press\, 2024)\, won a 2024 National Jewish Book Award. According to The Wall Street Journal\, “Forbidden is an engaging and surprisingly cheerful study of that odd couple of the religious imagination\, the Jew and the pig.” In addition\, he is the author of Rabbinic Drinking: What Beverages Teach Us About Rabbinic Literature (University of California Press\, 2020); The Jewish Dietary Laws in the Ancient World (Cambridge University Press\, 2016); and Food and Identity in Early Rabbinic Judaism (Cambridge University Press\, 2010)\, as well as the co-editor of four volumes\, including Feasting and Fasting: The History and Ethics of Jewish Food (New York University Press\, 2019) and Animals and the Law in Antiquity (Brown Judaic Studies\, 2021).
