SUMMARY:Because You Were Strangers in Egypt: Loving Strangers and Neighbors in Jewish Tradition
DESCRIPTION:Over and over\, the Torah commands “you shall love the stranger because you were strangers in the land of Egypt.” In this timely three-part series\, we will explore how Jews have thought about loving the other in text and practice. We will use a diversity of perspectives from across Jewish history to spark lively conversation about ways we might find meaning in these timeless instructions in a today full of turmoil. \n\n\n\nThis series is open to folks of all Jewish learning backgrounds. Texts will be provided in the original and in translation\, and light snacks will be served. \n\n\n\nThis class meets on Monday evenings\, March 16-30 at the Edlavitch DCJCC. The cost ($45) covers all 3 sessions; you are welcome to join even if you cannot join every session! \n\n\n\nIf you have any questions\, or if cost is a barrier in any way\, please reach out to Rabbi Atara at acohen@edcjcc.org. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Instructor: Rabbi Atara Cohen serves as the Director of Jewish Life and Learning at the EDCJCC in Washington DC\, where she cultivates innovative and diverse communities around Jewish values and practice. Rabbi Atara has a Bachelor of Arts in Religion from Princeton University and was granted Orthodox ordination by Yeshivat Maharat. She brings several years of experience fostering pluralistic Jewish communities in New York City\, including serving as part of the Congregation Beit Simchat Torah clergy team\, teaching Judaics at Heschel Middle School\, and leading Base Manhattan. Trained in traditional Yeshiva contexts\, Atara is dedicated to translating the complexity of tradition into approachable content for manifold contexts with extensive experience teaching and writing curricula for students of all ages and backgrounds. She lives in Washington\, DC with her spouse and a growing number of not-yet-dead houseplants.

SUMMARY:Handmade for the Homeless - March 2026
DESCRIPTION:Join fellow knitters and crocheters to make handmade goodies for a great cause! Our goal is to contribute as many warm winter items as possible to distribute to individuals experiencing homelessness in the DC area. All levels of knitters and crocheters are welcome. Don’t know how to knit or crochet? We’ll teach you! \n\n\n\nWhat should I bring? Please bring your own needles/crochet hooks. If you are not already working on a warm winter item and are looking for a great project or just starting out\, please bring #8 or #10 knitting needles (circular or straight) or a size H crochet hook. Don’t forget the patterns you’re working on or want to start. \n\n\n\nWhat do you supply? We provide lots of beautiful yarn\, several patterns including hat patterns using #17 needles or a size N crochet hook\, and experienced knitters and crocheters to teach anyone who would like to learn. If you can’t join us in person\, join us in spirit by knitting or crocheting hats\, scarves\, gloves and mittens\, socks or slippers\, and other items to keep people warm during the cold winter months. \n\n\n\nIf you have any questions about this event\, contact Chana at chanaengel@gmail.com.

SUMMARY:Prepping for Parenthood
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the EDCJCC for a workshop that prepares you practically for the profound transformation of becoming a parent. Most pre-birth preparation focuses entirely on caring for the baby. But caring for yourself as you transition to this new stage deserves just as much preparation. \n\n\n\nLet’s face it: the new baby will take up considerable emotional and logistical space in your already full life. Something will have to give. This workshop helps you prepare for that reality. We’ll map your support network before you need it. We’ll talk about which services to book now so you’re not scrambling later. And we’ll create a plan for making conscious choices about what gives—so you can transition to parenthood while preserving your friendships\, your hobbies\, and time just for you. \n\n\n\nYou’ll leave with:• Your postpartum support network mapped out (who to call for what\, before you’re in crisis mode).• Services pre-selected so you’re not making decisions while exhausted.• A concrete plan for reclaiming your time and identity as the intensity eases.• A guilt-free framework for making it easier—shortcuts\, outsourcing\, and simplifying aren’t failing\, they’re how you create space to actually be present.• A script for the partnership conversation about who does what. \n\n\n\nBabies are welcome. Partners are encouraged to attend. While there may be some discussion of the biological pregnancy\, birthing\, and postpartum experience\, we welcome anyone expecting the arrival of a baby\, whether biological\, adoptive\, through a gestational carrier\, or any other pathway. LGBTQ and straight\, Jewish and non-Jewish – all are warmly welcomed! \n\n\n\nThis workshop will be led by Jennifer Mickel\, Founder of The Third Shift\, a company that brings management frameworks to the mental load. Jennifer brings her JD-MBA and strategy consulting experience to helping parents streamline family operations and reclaim more joy. \n\n\n\nIf you have any questions or if the cost of this program is prohibitive\, please reach out to Miriam at mszubin@edcjcc.org.
