HEBREW CLASSES – Fall session 2019

The Edlavitch DCJCC offers many levels of conversational Hebrew, from learning the aleph-bet to reading advanced literature. Our teachers are native Hebrew speakers with extensive teaching experience, including at the university level. Not sure which level to take? Scroll down to learn more about each level, or click here.

Tuesday evenings, October 29 – December 17, 2019
Wednesday evenings, October 30 – December 18, 2019 (no class Wednesday, November 27; make-up class Thursday, December 12)
Thursday afternoons, October 31 – December 19, 2019 (no class Thursday, November 28; make-up class Wednesday, December 4)

Required Textbooks:
Aleph, Bet, Gimel, Dalet, and Hey use Hebrew From Scratch, Part 1 (Ivrit Min HaHatchala).
Vav uses Hebrew From Scratch, Part 2.
Zion uses Ivrit MeBreshit, Part 1.
You can purchase a new copy of the textbook at the time of registration and pick it up in your classroom on the first day of class.
The deadline to register for fall Hebrew classes is Monday, October 21.
BEGINNER HEBREW LEVELS
Aleph: Tuesdays, 6:00 PM – 7:00 PM
Teacher: Gila Efrati
Beginners! This is the class for you if you need to learn the aleph-bet (Hebrew alphabet) and start building your vocabulary. Students with a basic knowledge of the aleph-bet but very little or no vocabulary or grammar experience should sign up for this level as well.

Bet: Tuesdays, 7:00 PM – 8:00 PM

This class is for students who have completed Aleph OR know the aleph-bet, can read, and have started to gather vocabulary and grammar.

Gimel: Tuesdays, 8:00 PM – 9:00 PM
Teacher: Gila Efrati
This class is for students who have completed Bet OR have some vocabulary and a grasp of grammar.

INTERMEDIATE HEBREW LEVELS
Dalet: Wednesdays, 8:00 PM – 9:00 PM
Teacher: Sarit Lisogorsky
This level is intended for students who have completed level Gimel OR for students who are able to conjugate verbs in the present tense, use pronouns, and conduct basic conversations in the present tense.

Hey: Mondays, 6:00 PM – 7:00 PM
Teacher: Sarit Lisogorsky
This level is for students who can hold conversations in the present tense; read, comprehend, and answer questions about simple texts on a variety of topics; and conjugate verbs in the present tense. This class focuses on building vocabulary, improving reading, and conducting conversations in the present tense.

Vav: Mondays, 7:00 PM – 8:00 PM
Teacher: Sarit Lisogorsky
This level focuses on building vocabulary, improving reading, and conducting conversations in past tense. In addition to the required textbook, this class may also use a book from the Gesher Library Series, which can be acquired once the class begins.

ADVANCED HEBREW LEVELS
Please contact our advanced Hebrew teacher, Sarit Lisogorsky before registering for an advanced Hebrew class to make sure you’re in the right level. Entrance into an advanced level will be at the discretion of the instructor.
Zion: Mondays, 8:00 PM – 9:00 PM
Teacher: Sarit Lisogorsky
This is a high-level class focusing on improving accuracy in reading, speaking, and grammar. In addition to the required textbook, this class may also use a book from the Gesher Library Series, which can be acquired once the class begins.

Chet: Wednesdays, 7:00 PM – 8:00 PM
Teacher: Sarit Lisogorsky
This class is student-driven, with high-level reading, writing, and speaking on current events, short stories, news articles, and Israeli literature.

Tet: Wednesdays, 6:00 PM – 7:00 PM
Teacher: Sarit Lisogorsky
This is our highest level Hebrew class for students who would like to do a lot of in-depth speaking and reading. This class is currently reading the Israeli classic Tarnagol Caparot by Eli Amir.

AFTERNOON HEBREW CLASS
Afternoon Hebrew: Thursdays, 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM
Teacher: Sarit Lisogorsky
New this session, we are offering a class for students with some Hebrew background who would like to refresh and restart their living. If you live or work in the neighborhood, register for Afternoon Hebrew and watch your knowledge base grow.

The EDCJCC reserves the right to cancel this class if a minimum of five students do not register.

Not sure what level is right for you? Look at the questions below to help you decide:
- Never studied Hebrew in the past? Forgotten everything you learned in Hebrew School? Try Aleph.
- Can you read and write most of the letters? Have a small vocabulary? Bet is the right class for you.
- Can you make simple sentences about daily life with some adjectives? Try taking Gimel.
- Can you conjugate in the present tense and discuss the weather? Enroll in Dalet.
- Can you ask for directions, order from a menu, and ask/answer questions about different topics? Try Hey.
- Can you converse about daily activities in yours and others’ lives? Conjugate in the past tense? Try enrolling in Vav.
- Can you talk about the theme of a book you read and/or conjugate in the future tense? Take Zion.
- Can you read a simple newspaper? Understand more complicated grammar? Chet is the place for you.
- Can you comprehend Hebrew literature with teacher support? Enroll in Tet.
